Preparing for a New Year

Buh-bye 2021! You weren’t quite as bad as 2020, but you were no picnic either, and we are NOT sorry to see you go!

One thing we can say about you, however: you showed us where our life’s priorities really should be: with our loved ones

It can’t be said enough how wonderful it has been to spend time in person with the people we like and love: our friends and family.

You did give us that wonderful thing, 2021, and we genuinely thank you!

And now it’s on to 2022!

And here’s what’s on our agenda, due to the lessons learned last year:

Relationships are EVERYTHING, and we want to do all the things with everyone we love for YEARS to come!

And doing so means we need to stay healthy.

So as we prepare for 2022, we plan to eat better and exercise more. Here’s how:

Eating better does NOT mean giving up all the fun stuff. The cookies, the pies, the candies, the wine, etc. It DOES mean having a sweet maybe once or twice a week and having a drink only at celebrations or the odd Happy Hour after work once or twice a month.

We’ll also cut back on fatty cheese and fatty meats. We’ll eat more veggies and legumes.

Exercising more does NOT mean running five miles a day, five days a week, nor does it mean 90 minutes at the gym sweating buckets every other day.

It DOES mean walking at a moderate pace two or three miles a day at least three days a week (preferably with friends or family), and doing something like the 7-minute workout at least once a day, four or five days a week.

Eating healthfully and getting moderate exercise over the years gives us a much better chance of helping us stay healthy and able to do the things we want with the people we want well into our dotage.

  • We’ll get our finances in order.

Because we want to do as much as we can as often as possible with as many people as we love/like, we know that it will take money.

After all, if we want to go on nice trips, it takes money. If we want to help others in some way financially, it takes money. If we’d like to care for young people or older people, it takes money.

So making sure we have money – now and in the future – means we’ll need to pay attention to where it goes.

Many of us think that managing our money is hard. It’s not easy, but it’s something we truly can learn how to do.

(If you want a simple way to get out of debt, we wrote about it in November.)

  • We’ll improve our income prospects by learning new skills.

Doing so means we’ll be able to do more of the things we want to do with – and for – the people we want.

(Doing with: taking our children to Disney World, going on a romantic trip with our spouse. Doing for: helping our children pay for college/certification/learning in-demand work skills, helping our parents pay for caregiving help when they no longer can take of themselves on their own.)

Yes, most people go back to school or otherwise spend money (possibly going into debt via student loans) to do so.

But that’s not always necessary:

  • Talk to your supervisor and ask what you need to do to get a promotion. You may not need to get new skills: you may need to take on more responsibility.
  • If you do need to acquire new skills, ask your manager if there’s a way you could learn on the job. Many companies are starting to “upskill” their employees in the new technology rather than hire people who already have those skills because it’s more expensive to hire new people than retrain current team members.

Even small steps today can mean a better tomorrow for years to come
