Seasonal Hiring for Nashville Area Remains Strong

The holiday season hiring outlook for the Nashville area looks strong — not surprising given the robust economy.

Brenda Franklin manager for Nashville-based staffing firm Hire Dynamics

Brenda Franklin, manager for Nashville-based staffing firm Hire Dynamics, said that with the U.S. job market the tightest it has been in five decades and consumer confidence nearing an 18-year high, online shopping is surging.

Companies in logistics and manufacturing are looking to improve technology and automation to keep up with demand, Franklin (pictured) said.

“With Amazon increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and more for less favorable shifts/hours, the smaller companies are having a difficult time competing, even though the jobs in many cases are not seasonal, the current talent here in Nashville is going where the money is,” she said.

Franklin provided the following statistics and information related to holiday/seasonal hiring in the Nashville market:

  • There are more than 70,000 jobs in Middle Tennessee, putting the worker-to-job ratio at 4-to-1.
  • Between May 2017 and May 2018, Nashville’s job market saw 2.1 percent growth, half the figure of what it saw during the same time frame the year prior. Franklin said the cooling is not because the opportunities are shrinking but, rather, a result of the labor pool shrinking.
  • While the healthcare and the tech industries continue to rank in the top five, a surge in hospitality and logistics will likely see those sectors do the most hiring this year.

About one-third of the positions will turn into permanent hires, Franklin said.
