How a Simple Walk Around the Block WILL Improve Your Life!

By Hire Dynamics
CATEGORY: Blog

Just one walk at a slow pace around the block every day WILL improve your life.

Really, it will!!

Or, as this article says: “Even small bursts of exercise have benefits.”

You’ve no doubt have heard that exercise is critical to good health. And it is

Regular physical exercise can:

  • Help you control your weight (or maintain weight loss).
  • Combat high blood pressure,
  • Boost “good cholesterol,”
  • Decrease unhealthy triglycerides,
  • Reduce your chances of experiencing heart disease,
  • Improve your mood,
  • Promote better sleep,
  • Boost your energy.
  • And can manage many other conditions such as:
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Depression
    • Metabolic Syndrome
    • Stroke
    • Anxiety
    • Many types of cancer
    • Arthritis
    • Helps prevent falling

But you’re busy. You have RESPONSIBILITIES.

We understand. Really.

Life is crazy right now, and deciding you “must” exercise for at least 30 minutes three or four days a week at a moderate pace or intensity (as is often recommended) is just another dang thing you “must” add to your already overflowing to-do list!

So just walk around the block. Once. Slowly if you need to.

Just. Once. Every day.

Walk during your lunch hour. Walk after you get home from work. Stop at a park on your way home and walk. Walk in the parking lot at the grocery store after grocery shopping after work. Walk around the field when you go see your kid’s soccer game. Park far from the store and walk to it.

You get the idea.

So how will walking just one block a day help you?

According to the article at the first link above, an analysis of data from more than 4,000 40-plus people who wore tools that measured their exertion and physical activity found no difference” (emphasis ours) in the “lowered risk of all-cause mortality between people” who had bouts of “moderate-to-vigorous physical activity” (MVPA) that were less than five minutes long, “than those who moved for longer” (emphasis ours).

There is a “but,” though…

You still need to exercise at a moderate pace for 150 minutes a week.

But you can do so in small bursts throughout that week: the block walk!

A “moderate pace” will be different depending on how fit you are. If you’re out of shape, that walk around the block (if you do so at a brisk-for-you-pace) counts: you simply need to sweat a teeny bit or be slightly out of breath. (Those are signs of a moderate walking pace.)

A week is seven days of 24 hours each. Think about how many times you walk to the grocery store in a week. Or walk in a park. Or walk the dog. Or walk up and down steps in your home.

If you do so at a moderate-pace-for-you for five minutes 30 times in any given week, you’ve made it!

So give it a try. Just try.
