Don’t Stop Looking: Employers ARE Hiring During the Holidays

By Hire Dynamics

Is this you?

“I’d love to find a new job, but I’ll wait until after New Year’s to start looking. After all, no one hires during the holidays.”

This is not true. Really, it’s not.

Employers do hire during the holidays. They always have; they always will.

And we’re not talking “just” part-time or seasonal positions either:

Employers ARE looking for great people for full-time, permanent positions right now!

In fact, looking for work during the holiday season also means you may not have as much competition or jobs as so many people think “no one hires during holidays.”

Hiring indeed slows down during December, but that’s often because many people –job seekers and hiring managers – are focused on enjoying the season.

What’s more, it’s more likely that interviews will happen in December for people to start jobs in January/February.

This is typical because it does take time to interview and make a hiring decision.

The job process usually is such:

  • You see an open position one month and apply.
  • If you apply later in the month, it will probably be in the next month if you’re called in for an interview.
  • The employer interviews a few people over two or three weeks.
  • Hiring decisions typically take place a week or two after interviews are complete. Which usually is the month after interviews take place.
  • People currently working often want to give at least two weeks’ notice to their current employer, so they usually start two weeks or more after giving notice, making their start date about three months after seeing the job posting.

Remember: a slowdown in hiring is not the same as “no one is hiring.”

Another reason to continue to look for work during the holiday season: momentum

There’s a weird thing about the job hunt: the more you do, the quicker you get hired.

Here’s what we mean:

  • You apply for a few jobs in the first week of your job hunt. You hear nothing back.
  • You apply for a few more jobs in the second week of your hunt. You may – but probably won’t – hear anything back from the companies to which you applied the last week. And you hear nothing back from the jobs to which you applied this week.
  • You apply to a few more jobs in the third week. You probably hear back from one or two jobs from the first week and maybe even the second week.
  • You keep applying, and you hear from more and more employers.
  • You interview with one company the third week.
  • You’re still applying and hearing back from companies in the fourth and fifth weeks and beyond.
  • You’re going on two, three, or even four job interviews during the fourth week.
  • Companies start letting you know if they want you during that fourth week.
  • If you’re still applying for jobs, you’re still hearing back and going on interviews.

The result? If you continue applying over 4-5 weeks, don’t be surprised if you received one, two, or even three job offers.

And so you’ll have the happy “problem” of deciding which one to choose!

That’s how the “momentum” of a great job hunt can work. The more you do, the more results you receive, and as time goes on, the more often you’ll receive requests for job interviews as well as job offers!

(Important note: the job-hunt momentum principal works at any time of the year. So no matter when you look for work, work the process for quicker results!)
